UK shatters all-time temperature records as heatwave scorches western Europe Britain on Tuesday broke its all-time temperature record, provisionally hitting 39.1°C in Surrey while firefighters battled to contain wildfires in south-west France as a fierce heatwave from southern Europe edged northwards.
