'There is a long tradition in West Africa of resolving crises through negotiation & compromise' ECOWAS leaders are meeting tomorrow following Niger junta leaders' refusal to meet with ECOWAS, the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN). Ever since the deadline expired, talk about military intervention has considerably dwindled. Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State has said that both Russia and Wagner stand to gain from this coup. Countries such as Italy, Germany and the US are calling for a diplomatic resolution. As the junta seeks to consolidate its power, FRANCE 24 is joined by Paul Melly, Chatham House Consulting Fellow for the Africa Programme & Reporter / Researcher on the Sahel, West Africa and Madagascar.
