Sweden expands military presence in Baltic Sea Sweden has abandoned two centuries of military non-alignment as it recently became the newest member of NATO. The country's military has been boosting its preparedness since Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea by reintroducing limited conscription in 2017 and reopening a garrison on the Baltic Sea island of Gotland in 2018. Sweden has also massively increased defence spending after slashing it during the post-Cold War period. FRANCE 24's Clovis Casali reports.
