Petro Poroshenko: 'We should not only win the war, we should win the peace' When he was Ukraine’s president, Petro Poroshenko says he knew how to get along with Donald Trump. The leader of the opposition European Solidary party tells François Picard about how to handle the new administration in Washington and confirms that he’s ready when the time comes to throw his hat in the ring for a return to power. But he insists that it's not time for elections: 'You can't have elections and unity." He asserts that Ukraine can only win this battle by demonstrating strength through "unity". All the while, he says, the Russian president only understands "the language of strength," which must come from the "unity of Europe, the US and Ukraine": "Putin wants all of Ukraine and he wants to kill me. But I will not leave. Try to find a compromise between that!" He flatly rejects the notion there could ever be compromise with Russia: "No compromise on sovereignty, national identity, territorial integrity, the armed forces, Russian sanctions, and no compromise on future EU and NATO membership, 'Soviet" colonisation or occupation. "Everything else is possible!"
