One year on: Iranian women grapple with the aftermath of Mahsa Amini's death One year ago this week, the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in Iran sparked nationwide demonstrations against authorities in the Islamic Republic. For the women who led and participated in the protests, removing the hijab became a symbol of defiance against what they viewed as an oppressive government. One year later, FRANCE 24 meets with the women who took part in the demonstrations in Iran. While street protests have since died down, general discontent remains strong.
