NHPC plans ₹1.76-tn pumped storage units State-run NHPC Ltd plans to invest up to INR 1.76tn ($25.8bn) to establish pumped hydropower storage capacities of 20,000-22,000 MW across India. This investment will require a capex of INR 7-8 crore per MW. NHPC has already signed agreements with Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh to set up large pumped hydro projects. The focus on pumped storage follows the government?s policy push to ensure grid stability as renewable energy capacity increases in the country. Pumped storage projects store and generate electricity by transferring water between two reservoirs at different levels.
