Heat the body and not the room: Belgian researchers look for answers to the energy crisis In 2020, Belgian researchers from the University of Louvain launched an unprecedented experiment, known as 'SlowHeat', in which some thirty participants have lived without central heating, turning instead to other methods of keeping warm such as lowering their thermostats and wearing mittens at home. This year, the experiment enters its third winter, with the war in Ukraine highlighting the vulnerability of, and the widespread reliance on, fragile energy supplies.
