Burundi, neighbouring countries step up protection for Lake Tanganyika The second-largest lake in Africa, Lake Tanganyika is adorned with its sandy beaches that span four nations. But the ravages of overfishing and pollution have taken a toll on its delicate ecosystem. In a bid to rejuvenate its biodiversity, Burundi and its three neighbouring countries have taken the unprecedented decision to impose a three-month fishing ban on the lake every year, from May 15 to August 15.
