‘Bloody Omaha’: American veterans remember D-Day landings On this day 80 years ago, 156,115 Allied troops landed by sea onto Normandy beaches codenamed Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword, or were airdropped behind German coastal defences. They included 73,000 US troops, most of whom were part of the invasion force at Omaha. But they soon ran into difficulties and the beach became known as "Bloody Omaha". Emerald Maxwell takes a look.
