African union suspends Gabon: Opposition urges coup leaders to recognise it won election In Gabon, 48 hours after a military coup, the country has been suspended from the African Union. The takeover by the Presidential Guard, brought a sudden end to the ruling Bongo dynasty, where father, then son have ruled for almost six decades. Ali Bongo remains under house arrest at the Presidential residence, where he's released a video calling for international help. The coup leaders have named as the transitional leader, General Brice Oligui Nguema, reported to be a cousin of Ali Bongo. Nigeria's government has referred to the wave of armed interventions in central and west africa as contagious autocracy. FRANCE 24's Antonia Kerrigan, has the latest.
